Tearing down the current Blair G. Ewing Center (formerly the Mark Twain School) will reduce the inventory of available schools at a time when the County is already struggling with school overcrowding. Under the last Shady Grove Sector Plan, the Shady Grove Transportation Depot on Crabbs Branch Way (which is where our school buses are maintained & parked overnight) is to be closed this coming January, apparently to make way for residential development.
It is well documented that school overcrowding is a massive issue all across MCPS. This proposal is to RAZE an existing school building for a bus depot.
The Blair G. Ewing Center (formerly Mark Twain School) is 85,400 square feet with a State Rated student capacity of 370 (Pulled from the FY 2002 MCPS Master Plan). Total rooms = 37 (this averages to 10 students per classroom). Compare that same square footage as a neighborhood school - Arcola Elementary (today) is 85,469 square feet and has a State Rated Capacity of 603.
The school board should not be demolishing a school when over crowding is rampant. Why not instead re-open English Manor as an elementary school (for which it was intended)?
