The Shady Grove Bus Depot Move is on Hold:

According to a 4/26/17 MyMCMedia article, General Services Director David Dise told MyMCMedia that "instead of relocating the school buses from the Shady Grove depot to a different site, the county will now be studying the problem of parking buses all along the system."

WE MUST REMAIN VIGILANT.
The news regarding a broader bus parking study is very encouraging. It does NOT officially remove Avery Road from consideration. We will continue to follow this issue and report our findings. We strongly encourage our friends and neighbors to do likewise. For now, we're happy with these new developments.

THE ISSUE: PROPOSAL TO DEMOLISH A SCHOOL FOR A BUS DEPOT RELOCATION

The Montgomery County Executive is considering a plan to close the current school bus depot on Crabbs Branch Way in Derwood so developers can build new housing on that land. In turn, the Blair G. Ewing Center school and recreation area on Avery Road in Rockville would be demolished to make way for a new bus depot.

This is a bad plan for these reasons:
  1. Gridlocking Traffic: Already one of the most congested roads in Maryland, this proposal would add hundreds of school buses and additional cars to Norbeck Road four times a day (i.e., to and from schools in both the morning and afternoon). Read More >>
  2. Environmental Damage: The Avery Road location sits on top of a steep hill draining directly into Rock Creek. The location also includes forest conservation easement. The potential for pollution is great. Read More >>
  3. Fiscal Waste: Putting a bus depot on Avery Road will mean the demolition of an active school (The Blair G. Ewing Center) and a highly used recreational area (Mark Twain School Athletic Park). Read More >>

Numerous neighboring communities have come together to form the Coalition Against the Avery Road bus Depot (CAARD).

Please help us stop the bus depot by calling and emailing the County Council and asking them to “Say NO to Avery Road!”
